Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Cavity Treatment in Christiansburg, VA

Not every cavity needs to be drilled right away. Silver diamine fluoride, often called SDF, is a liquid that is brushed onto a cavity to help stop it from growing. At Opulent Pediatric Dentistry in Christiansburg, SDF gives families a gentle option for young children, anxious children and children with special health care needs, with no shots and no drilling.

Families from Blacksburg, Radford, Dublin, Pulaski and Roanoke visit our office to talk through cavity treatment options. Our lead pediatric dentist, Dr. Cristelle Rodriguez, DDS, and our team will explain whether SDF is a good fit for your child's teeth.

What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride?

SDF combines silver, which helps kill the bacteria that cause decay, with fluoride, which helps harden the tooth surface. When it is applied to a cavity, it can stop, or arrest, the decay in many cases. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has published guidance supporting the use of SDF to manage cavities in children.

SDF does not rebuild a tooth that has already lost structure, but it can stop a cavity from getting bigger so the tooth stays comfortable and healthy. Later, a filling or crown can be placed over it if needed.

Who Is SDF a Good Fit For?

The dentist may suggest SDF for:

  • Toddlers and very young children who are not yet able to sit through a traditional filling.
  • Children with special health care needs for whom regular treatment is difficult.
  • Several small cavities at once, to stabilize them while planning longer-term care.
  • Cavities on baby teeth that will fall out in the next few years.
  • Families who want to delay or avoid sedation for a child with early cavities.

SDF is not used on teeth that already have a toothache, swelling or an infection in the nerve. Those teeth usually need pulp therapy or other treatment.

The One Thing to Know: SDF Stains Decay Black

SDF permanently darkens the decayed part of the tooth to a black color. This is how you can tell the cavity has been treated. Healthy tooth enamel does not stain, but the treated spot will stay dark unless it is later covered with a tooth-colored filling or crown. SDF can also temporarily stain skin or clothing, so we protect your child's lips and clothes during treatment.

For back teeth, the dark spots are often hard to see. For front teeth, we will talk with you about appearance before treatment, and tooth-colored fillings can be placed over treated areas later.

What to Expect

The treatment takes only a few minutes. The tooth is dried, and a tiny brush is used to apply the liquid to the cavity. Your child may notice a metallic taste for a short time. Afterward, your child can eat and drink normally after about an hour. SDF is often more effective when it is reapplied, so the dentist may recommend another application at a later visit, and we will check the treated teeth at every checkup.

SDF as Part of a Long-Term Plan

SDF is one tool among several. After the cavities are arrested, the dentist may recommend tooth-colored fillings for appearance or to restore chewing surfaces, crowns for larger areas, or simply regular monitoring. Good daily habits keep treated teeth healthy: brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, limiting sugary drinks and snacks between meals and keeping up with checkups so the dentist can confirm the decay has stopped.

Caring for Teeth Treated With SDF

After SDF, your child can return to normal brushing that night. Keep using fluoride toothpaste, and limit sugary drinks between meals so treated areas stay hard. At follow-up visits, the dentist checks that the treated spots feel hard and look dark, which is a sign the decay has stopped, and decides whether another application is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does silver diamine fluoride hurt?

No. SDF is brushed onto the tooth, so no shots or drilling are needed. Some children notice a metallic taste for a short time.

Will SDF turn my child's teeth black?

SDF stains the decayed part of the tooth black. Healthy enamel does not stain. The dark spot can later be covered with a tooth-colored filling or crown if needed.

Does SDF replace fillings?

SDF can stop many cavities from growing, but it does not rebuild lost tooth structure. Some teeth still need a filling or crown, and SDF can be used first to stabilize them.

How many times does SDF need to be applied?

It is often more effective with more than one application. The dentist will recommend a schedule and check the treated teeth at each visit.

Who should not have SDF?

SDF is not used on teeth with a toothache, swelling or infection, or for anyone with a silver allergy. Tell us about any allergies or mouth sores before treatment.

Is silver diamine fluoride covered by insurance?

Some dental plans cover SDF for children, while others treat it differently. Our team can check your benefits before treatment.

Can SDF be used on permanent teeth?

SDF is used most often on baby teeth, but it can also help arrest cavities on permanent teeth in some situations, such as when a child cannot yet sit for a filling. The dentist will explain whether it is a good option.
